Wordpress 5.0 has launched, and with it comes an exciting new change: the Gutenburg editor.
Gutenburg has been in development over the past year and has rapidly changed the process for content creation on WordPress sites. The interface is far more intuitive and feature-rich than its predecessor and this new update aims to put better website design tools into the hands of all WordPress website owners.
In the new editor, all content is represented as a block. These blocks are placed and configured in the interface much like a "WYSIWIG" editor (What You See Is What You Get). The result is that you will get a better visual representation of what your page will look like while you're still editing the page. This new editor might be more familiar to those of us who have used services like Wix and SquareSpace in the past.
The big advantage that WordPress has over these self-service tools, however, is that your website is still fully customizable and extensible through pre-built plugins and by web design and development professionals. This combination of ease-of-use and extreme customizability has almost limitless potential. For instance, you could get a completely custom WordPress website made by a design and development agency (such as Pleth) and then turn right around and easily create more website content for yourself as needed. When you need extra help, or if you want to change some more technical aspects of your site, you could go right back to the agency and have them do that work for you.
The bottom line: Gutenburg makes creating web pages easier, even for those of us who aren't as technically inclined. Once your website is up and running, it's a breeze to manage your own content. If you have any questions, feel free to check the link below or contact us for a consultation.
