New WordPress release brings easier uploading, tablet optimization

Good news for fans of the WordPress blogging and content management platform—a new version is out with improvements to the interface, an easier media uploading experience and more.

After five months of development, WordPress 3.3 is now running for hosted blogs on wordpress.com and available for download at wordpress.org. In line with its tradition of nicknaming releases after jazz artists, this one has been dubbed Sonny Stitt for the legendary jazz saxophonist.

Notable features in this release:

  • A drag-and-drop media uploading experience. Skip browsing for a file the old fashioned way. Instead, just grab it from your desktop and drag it into the browser window to add it to your media library.
  • An improved interface. What used to be a laborious exercise in clicking and scrolling a vertical list of options, secondary items in the left-hand Dashboard menu now go more horizontal. Hover over the top level and sub-items elegantly float out to the right.
  • A tablet-optimized view. Responding to the explosion in the number of users browsing the web with tablets, WordPress 3.3 is better optimized to manage your content from these devices.

WordPress has long been a favorite for beginners to the world of blogging and as a free and easy to use manager for static Web content. With this release, things have gotten even easier.
