How Often to Update Your Website

Typing on computer

In the day-to-day operations of your business, your website may tend to be a low priority. However, as the buying trends of consumers change and evolve, a strong web presence is more important now than ever before.

This shouldn’t be news to you, but what you may not be aware of is how often you need to update your site to ensure your web presence is running on all cylinders.

SYSTEMS UPDATE

If you're managing your own CRM-backed website—like WordPress or Drupal—you should check the dashboard as often as possible for any updates to your CRM and its plugins/modules. Not doing so will open your website up to vulnerabilities.

If you manage your own server, you should check for updates every day, but be prepared to roll those updates back if they break your website and/or server. A simpler solution would be to let a web company handle it for a small fee. We just might be able to recommend one.

CONTENT UPDATE

Your content—meaning the typed words, not the graphics—should be updated at least once a month because fresh content is helpful content. And helpful content means happy clients as well as happy search engines.

Google continuously crawls sites to make sure the search engine is turning up the best results when users type in keywords or phrases. If your content doesn’t change, Google will forget you’re there, to an extent. So, the best way to keep Google crawling your site for new content—and keep people coming back for new info—is to consistently make updates.

Every business is different, but there are ways to make easy content updates in the form of blogs and news articles that you can then share via social media. Again, you can manage this yourself or you can enlist the help of a full-service agency. We just might know one of those, too.
